The Hawaiʻi English Language Program (HELP) is an intensive English language program run by the Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in Honolulu. Our program focuses on Academic English preparation and students who complete the program may be conditionally admitted to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Our curriculum covers the four skill areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In addition, students at most levels may choose electives that provide extra practice in the skill areas as well as grammar and TOEFL ITP test preparation. As part of the Department of Second Language Studies, our program is also a place of innovative and pioneering research. Since our program focuses on Academic English, classes focus on those skills that students need for university studies as well as in business. These skills include academic reading, writing, research, lecture note-taking, oral presentation, and group discussion. Go to Course Descriptions for more information.

All HELP students are required to participate in service-learning activities, which provide students with the opportunity to volunteer in the local community. Students are able to learn more about American culture, practice listening to and speaking English in real-life situations, meet and work with people from all walks of life, and gain memorable experiences. As members of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, students can explore and discover the campus, join campus events, activities, and clubs where they can meet university students. HELP students can also join their instructors in weekly activities that include surfing, hula, hiking, and visiting cultural sites around the island. Corps members teach in four O‘ahu complex areas from Central O‘ahu to its Leeward Coast and three Hawai‘i Island complex areas serving all of the state's "Big Island."

Oʻahu is home to the majority of Hawaiʻi’s diverse population, a fusion of East and West cultures rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people. Since 2006, we have worked to find passionate individuals who are committed to education equity and expanding opportunities for all children. From our initial charter corps of 50 young leaders a wave of impact has steadily grown over the years, impacting over 50,000 students, primarily in our high need communities in the Leeward and Central Districts of O‘ahu. Today, the vast majority of new teachers are clustered in the Nānākuli-Wai‘anae complex.

Hawaiʻi island is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined its sheer size is awe-inspiring. We expanded our work here in 2009 and have worked to build strong community and school partnerships. While our Corps Members and Alumni teach in schools across all three complexes, our most significant concentration of teachers is in the complex.

The tourism-driven narrative of Hawai‘i as paradise ignores the complex history of colonization and its compounding effects that continue to impact generations of kamaʻāina (local residents) and Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) today. Kamaʻāina and Kanaka Maoli residents are increasingly priced out of their homes and Kanaka Maoli face persistent systemic inequities impacting education opportunities, health outcomes, and incarceration rates.

Combatting these inequities requires a collective effort, and we are proud to partner with the Hawai'i State Department of Education and our local communities. Also, because we believe that this movement must be locally led, we prioritize recruiting kamaʻāina and Kanaka Maoli corps members.
