The unique profile of Diamond Head (Lē‘ahi) sits prominently near the eastern edge of Waikiki’s coastline. Hawaii’s most recognized landmark is known for its historic hiking trail, stunning coastal views, and military history. Diamond Head State Monument encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater.


This broad, saucer-shaped crater was formed about 300,000 years ago during a single, explosive eruption that sent ash and fine particles in the air. As these materials settled, they cemented together into a rock called tuff, creating the crater, and which is visible from the trail in the park. Most of the vegetation and birds were introduced in the late 1800s to early 1900s.


The trail to the summit of Lē‘ahi was built in 1908 as part of O‘ahu’s coastal defense system. The 0.8 mile hike from trailhead to the summit is steep and strenuous, gaining 560 feet as it ascends from the crater floor. The walk is a glimpse into the geological and military history of Diamond Head. A concrete walkway built to reduce erosion shifts to a natural tuff surface about 0.2 mile up the trail with many switchbacks traversing the steep slope of the crater interior. The ascent continues up steep stairs and through a lighted 225-foot tunnel to enter the Fire Control Station completed in 1911. Built on the summit, the station directed artillery fire from batteries in Waikiki and Fort Ruger outside Diamond Head crater. At the summit, you’ll see bunkers and a huge navigational lighthouse built in 1917. The postcard view of the shoreline from Koko Head to Wai‘anae is stunning, and during winter, may include passing humpback whales.

The last entrance to hike the trail is at 4:00 pm. The gates are locked at 6:00 pm daily and all visitors must be out of the park by this time.

The park facilities on the crater floor of Diamond Head are fully accessible to those with disabilities. The hiking trail to the summit is not ADA accessible, it is very steep and uneven in some areas. The last 1/10 of a mile is all stairs and especially steep. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for your hike. Wear good walking shoes, bring water, and wear a hat and sunscreen.

The Division of State Parks constructed the Diamond Head interpretive kiosk in 2000 to provide visitor services and house exhibits about the history and resources of the crater. With visitors to the park exceeding 3,000 people per day, Diamond Head is one of the most popular and heavily visited destinations in the state. Visitors have been interested for years in purchasing souvenirs and memorabilia of their experience at the park. Through a collaboration with Pacific Historic Parks, the kiosk was renovated in 2014 to not only provide visitor services but offer a venue for purchasing items related to Diamond head. It can take 2 hours with traffic.Great atmosphere, BEAUTIFUL views, very cool activities included in the fee. Dinner buffet was great. The drinks were affordable. And there are opportunities for crowd interaction and participation. Wear flats, it’s all sand.

Unforgettable experience, we were picked up at the twin fin. Captain joe was our driver and cousin fefe was our Emcee for the duration of our journey there and back. When we arrived we were presented with leis, the food was amazing and of course the drinks were just flowing. We had Mai tai’s and they were delicious, I would definitely recommend the deluxe package our customer representative took very good care of us and his name was David. We took photos and towards the end of the event, we were gifted with our photos that we took when we arrived along with paradise laau totes. This is the first luau we have experienced with the expectation being a large, commercial, and showy luau with tons of food.The venue itself is incredibly large, even with large audiences it does not feel crowded and there are multiple shows, demonstrations, points of interest and activities to see and do before the main show starts.The show is fun, but is not focused on traditional Hawaiian culture; instead, Paradise Cove puts together a great Vegas-tier show highlighting a number of Pacific Island cultures and they're unique dances/hakka/etc.Food is about what you'd expect for mass-buffet-style Hawaiian food. My wife and I are not especially picky so we enjoyed the Kalua pork and other dishes.As good as the actual show and activities were, one of the highlights of the night was our bus ride-- specifically our tour guide Mo. Mo had us rolling laughing to and from the Luau, the entire bus having fun together, and by the end not wanting to get off. If you are going to Paradise Cove count yourself extremely fortunate if Mo is your guide!

The attack on the Pacific Fleet of the United States was unprecendented. That Sunday morning the Japanese invades awakened “The Sleeping Giant” that was the United States of America. December 7th, 1941 is one of those dates in history, much like July 4th, 1776, that is near and dear in the hearts of Americans. Anyone who lived through this time period can most likely tell you where they were on that day when they heard the news that the Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor. Although the United States had been actively contributing to the Allies in the European Theatre against the advances of Germany, this event formally threw the USA into the Second World War.

In just a few short hours, the mighty American fleet at Pearl Harbor had been savagely attacked and shattered, giving the Japanese the advantage and leaving the mighty US Navy in shock. The assault was a combined effort between Japanese bombers and fighter planes as well as very small submarines that came into the harbor to deliver torpedoes. The main target of the attack was the backbone of the Pacific Fleet located at Battleship Row where the ‘Mighty Missouri’ now stands for visitors to tour. Fortunately for the United States, the incredibly valuable aircraft carriers were out to sea and survived to mount a counter-offensive in 1942 at Midway and Coral Sea where the US Navy struck two decisive blows.
